Trust the Process

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

There are many things that are not seen or heard, but instead are felt to be true and worthwhile. You are probably familiar with this feeling as instincts or a hunch, and with that feeling often comes with a sense of what is right or wrong. Those instincts that send you ‘good to go’ or ‘get out of here now’ messages go way back to survival instincts and living in caves. Here’s where it gets tricky - sometimes your instincts will tell you to resist or avoid things that are actually good for you. This happens when the first feelings you have are uncomfortable or fearful (see above, caveman survival instincts). In those instances, you sometimes have to go against those instincts to push through and reach those self-awareness building, emotional growth benefits that help you become your fully realized self.

During career coaching, there’s a lot that comes up that can make your stop-doing-this-because-I’m-scared instincts pop up. Usually, however, those moments are signs that growth and change are just around the corner! This fear often translates into procrastination or even dropping out of sessions all together, which is the exact opposite of what signing up for career coaching is all about.

Confusing? Yeah. We know. Doing something good for you despite that confusion is what Shinebright coaches call Trusting the Process!

Here’s a few words of wisdom to help you push through those caveman instincts so you can reach the level of growth and change you have committed to creating for yourself.

  1. Resist the Resistance! In the spirit of Star Wars fans everywhere - the resistance can be strong with this one. One of Shinebright’s co-founders and career coaches, Shannon Philip, speaks directly to this by noting, “Resistance is actually an opportunity to face and heal old fears that may be holding you back in your life and career. Try re-framing the resistance as a sign that you’re stepping out of your comfort zone, which is to be celebrated, and creating an opportunity to shed what you no longer need anymore.”

  2. You Want It? Go Do It! W. H. Murray, a mid-century Scottish writer, puts it best by saying, “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness...the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred...Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it!”

  3. Stay Positive - Change Takes Time! “It takes time and space to believe in yourself as you push through to the other side”, says Shinebright co-founder and career coach Meike Hennon. “Feelings of frustration about not being where you want to be cloud your judgment in ways that make us go negative and impair our ability to keep moving. When those dark moods come, it is important to take deep breaths, examine what frustration is causing your negative head space, and make room for a positive thought. Change is hard but it is worth it.”

  4. Let The Pros Be The Pros - Shinebright’s career and life coaches are Gallup Certified Advisors with over 10 years of combined coaching experience - that translates into some pretty significant insight and expertise. “There is a momentum that can be created within you when you know that your coach will be asking you about what you’ve done to move towards your goals for the week”, notes Shinebright career coach Shannon Philip. “The power of working with a coach is to have someone reflect back to you the thoughts and behaviors that are serving and supporting you AND the thoughts and behaviors that may be holding you back”.
